Learning to drive in the Australian Capital Territory

Theory Test 

Minimum age  15 years and 9 months
Applicants must undertake course (Road Ready) which is available through High schools. Otherwise Road Ready Centres conduct the course. To book phone Ph. (02) 6162 5152. The cost is $ 130.00 
Documents to take when sitting for test Birth Certificate or Passport Proof of Address, Medicare Card/ATM card/Student card
Road code book Costs $ 4.60 from Shop fronts, Canberra
Knowledge Test Cost $ 20.00, only allowed two attempts same day 
Learner's license Must have L-plates for minimum of 6 months before taking test.

Please note the following regarding the probationary license. There are two methods of obtaining your license to drive solo:

1.  Take the test with a Government Examiner. After passing you will be issued with a probationary license for 3 years (must display P-plates for 3 years).

2.  Work through a log book with an accredited instructor, who will issue documentation on completion of required tasks. 

3.  To lift restrictions of P-plates drivers up to 26 years of age will need to undergo a Road Ready Plus course. This can be done only after 6 months on a probationary license.  The cost is $ 68.00.
