LEARNING TO DRIVE IN AUSTRALIA

 What learners need to know

Each State and Territory in Australia has different regulations for obtaining a Driver’s License. Please find a link to each State's regulations at the bottom of this page.

However, the initial procedure is the same for all States. Here are five steps we recommend you follow to get started.

Step 1: Obtain the road-code-book and study it. It’s available from the Transport Department in your State (link to your state below). Don’t think that passing the theory test is all common sense. It is unwise to undertake the test without studying the book carefully. Many fail and waste time and money.

Step 2: Learn and test your knowledge in the popular online theory test by our Royal Automobile Association. Your State's traffic regulations may vary slightly). When you are confident that you know the Give-way rules (you must get all 8 correct), study the multiple choice questions until you get most correct. Repeat until you are confident that you know these rules.

Step 3: Sit for the theoretical test at your nearest Department of Transport Office.  Click on your State's link below, for detailed rules in your state and what to take with you).

Step 4:  Visit our website and download each chapter of Low-Risk Driving - a skill for life as your personal guidebook. Please respect copyright laws - limited downloads for personal use only.

YOUR SAFETY IS

DRIVING PLUS

You will find that we have covered many road safety aspects, well beyond the basic driving techniques (night driving, high-speed cornering,  etc etc.)  Remember - passing the driving test is only the beginning.

Learning to drive continues long after you start driving on your own. Our website has plenty of interesting, informative material to keep you stimulated to want to become a skillful, competent driver.

After passing the theory test you will receive a license to learn to drive. You will be allowed to drive on  L-plates, with a supervising person beside you.

Step 5:  Where available, we recommend you first take some lessons with a professional driving instructor. You won’t learn wrong habits from a family member or friend and have a better chance to pass the driving test first time. Be sure what you are taught corresponds with our guidelines.

Ask a friend to recommend a good instructor. Since it is impossible for us to establish the reputation, qualification and experience of an instructor, we no longer provide a referral service).

Passing the driving test will allow you to drive on your own under certain conditions. You will drive on P-plates.
