1.10  ROUNDABOUTS

Roundabouts are merely intersections or junctions with a (mostly) round island in the centre.

At roundabouts apply the basic Give way to the right rule. Once you have entered the roundabout, everyone is on your left and is required to give way to you

Even experienced drivers must be on full alert on a dual-laned roundabout (pictured above and below).

Obey the following rules:

  • Stay in your lane as you travel through the roundabout. If there are two lanes on the approach, treat the roundabout as having two lane right through.
  • Never turn right from the left lane or left from the right lane, unless white painted arrows indicate you are allowed to do so.

There is one exception to this rule: If you need to turn right, but want to enter a property immediately after turning right - how can this be done?

This vehicle wants to turn left at point B. To make it easy, the driver thinks it is OK to turn right from point A. The van is not intending to turn, but continues straight ahead. CRASH!

But how is the car going to turn left at point B, if exiting in the right hand lane lane?

      Do not turn from A

Safe solution:

Exit into the left lane as shown on left. Give a left turn signal and move briskly. Impatient drivers from behind may force you to stay in the right lane.

As with intersections generally, approach a roundabout with caution, obey all give way rules and exit briskly.

Some dual-laned roundabouts display a sign "Right lane must turn right".  Obey the directional arrow or you may collided with a vehicle moving straight ahead (as in above example.

Only proceed through a roundabout after a good view to the right is obtained. The decision that there is no traffic on or approaching the roundabout can only be made, after a clear view is obtained on the right.

Watch for traffic approaching fast, especially motorcyclists entering the roundabout at high speed - they may have a clear view to their right and not slow to a safe speed!

Roundabouts are a very effective method of slowing traffic and moving it through crossroads with minimal delay.
